6 Opportunities for Artists to Apply For in 2019 (with Rolling Applications)

As an artist, it’s hard to feel like there are ways to un-starve yourself and find support for your projects, especially when balancing application deadlines and time-lines.

So—here are some opportunities available year-round, for the times when your project doesn’t fit neatly into someone else’s schedule.

The Awesome Grant

Foundation: The Awesome Foundation

Disciplines: All

Location: Global

Specifications: None

Opportunity: $

How hard is the application? Essentially, 3 short responses. 20-40 mins.

Awesome Grants are $1,000 grants, awarded monthly, to projects with unique and interesting perspectives within their respective disciplines. The foundation operates using fully-autonomous “micro-chapters,” each with their own perspective on what makes a project “awesome.”

Helpful hint: Do your research on what micro-chapter is right for your project.

A.I.R.—New York Artists Program

Foundation: Artist in Residence, Inc.

Disciplines: Visual Art

Location: Brooklyn, NY

Specifications: Women-identified applicants residing in New York.

Opportunity: Space & Development

Cost: $500 initiation, $240 monthly membership dues. Paid only if selected.

How hard is the application? Portfolio, Artist Statement, Short Answers, References. 60-90 mins.

A.I.R. is “a feminist artist-run organization with a self-directed governing body. A.I.R. is an alternative cultural institution that is supported by a network of active artist participants.” Essentially, you get access to space, resources, and opportunities for both mandatory and optional exhibitions of your work.

Forge Fuel & Barn Residency

Cost: Fuel: $80 + Travel Expenses. Food and housing included. 

Barn Residency: Flat Fee + Travel Expenses. Food and housing included.

How hard is the application? Google Form, Short Answers, Writing Sample. 15-25 min.

Forge Fuel is a monthly writer’s retreat hosted at super cozy accommodations in Connecticut, so it’s easy to get to for anyone living in New York. They provide space and offer opportunities to receive feedback on your work—and they even offer home-cooked meals as part of your stay.

The Forge Red Barn Residency offers the participants, essentially, everything they offer in their Fuel model except in a week long format that includes access to on-your-feet development space in a big, beautiful barn.

Helpful hint: They say the work is for “writers,” but that just means art that tells a story. They’ve had playwrights to circus performers to musicians and plenty of things in-between.

Sokoloff Arts Fellowship

How hard is the application? Writing Samples, Artist Statement, Short Answers, References. 50-60 mins.

In collaboration with Town Stages, Sokoloff Arts is a home for the life cycle of an artistic project—whatever project that may be—into “its next phase of development.” The participants receive access to Town’s huge and beautiful spaces and steep (to free) discounts on rehearsal space, plus advisement, and plenty of feedback opportunities.

The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant

How hard is the application? Portfolio, Cover Letter, Short Answers, Resume. 20-30 mins.

The Pollock Foundation supports artists who need financial support in order to continue their growth as an artist—whether that’s for materials, studio space, assistance with medical expenses, or for money to be able to take on a residency program. They’ve been around for over two decades and have awarded over 74 million dollars to artists in 77 different countries.

The Dramatist Guild Emergency Grant

Foundation: The Dramatist Guild

Disciplines: Playwrights, Composers, Lyricists, & Book-writers

Location: Global

Specifications: Based on emergency need. Can only be awarded once.

How hard is the application? 

This grant is a little different in that it stresses the need in need-based. As the name suggests, it’s more of an emergency life-line than a funding opportunity. The aim is to help writers facing dire or tragic circumstances maintain stability so that they can keep telling “their important stories.” And, well, how cool is that? Artists giving back to artists in their time of need.

Helpful hint: Tragic means severe hardship or unexpected illness. This grant is not for when your bank account running a little low.
